Today’s busy lifestyle and unhealthy habits lead to many problems. Sleeping pills are sedative and hypnotics. Sedatives are substances which lower excitement and calm the person without causing sleep, though some drowsiness can be present. Hypnotics are substances which induces and/or maintains sleep, similar to arousable sleep. More or less, both do the same job – to lower the functioning of central nervous system of your body.

Doctors prescribe sleeping pills to persons having a trauma, accident, surgery or is suffering from sleepless nights. The prescription can be anywhere from a mild relaxant to a powerful sleep aid. Though sleeping pills are overall dangerous, but to ensure least side-effects, you must take sleeping pills as your doctor told you and stop using it if needed – it’s the best way to fight problems caused by these pills.

One of the biggest side-effect of sleeping pills is that they’re highly addictive. After you start taking them, you slowly find that you can’t sleep without them. Truth is that sleeping pills are hypnotic-sedative drugs. Once you start taking them, you get habitual to them, slowly leading to addiction. Once addicted, you won’t be able to sleep without them. Often people fall for psychological addiction – they start thinking that they can only sleep if they take sleeping pills.

Regular intake of sleeping pills cause your body to adapt to it – then even you take sleeping pills, your body won’t get sleep due to it. To overcome this problem, you’ll have to increase the pills dosage. This continues on and on, until you cross the safe dosage line and become victim of many harmful side-effects of sleeping pills.

Sleeping pills do have side-effects, like any other medication. If you notice any side-effect of sleeping pills on your body, you must contact your doctor and tell him the problem. Ignorance is the biggest enemy – never ignore even small problems like headache or drowsiness that come to you after starting to intake sleeping pills. Parasomnias may include sleep-walking, driving in sleep, sleep-eating, making phone calls in sleep, or having sex while not being awake. Though parasomnias are rare but they’re not easy to detect once you start relying on sleeping pills.

Sleeping pills are really harmful, if not taken as prescribed by the doctor. If you get any problems after starting using these pills, then you shouldn’t think it’s normal and you must contact your doctor immediately. Sleeping pills shouldn’t be used before/while swimming, driving, during pregnancy and if one has got sleep apnoea syndrome. And, you should never go for over-the-counter sold sleeping pills – you won’t know you’re taking a medicine or a drug or a poison – and you’ll be risking your health & your life. Try some other orthodox medications for your sleeping problems and avoid using sleeping pills as much as you can.
